Patwardhan Examines Medication Abortion Provision by APCs in JAMA Network Open

Posted: 7/23/2026 ()

CSDE Affiliate Vedavati Patwardhan (Evans School) and co-authors recently published a research letter in JAMA Network Open titled, “Medication Abortion Provision by Advance Practice Clinicians and Abortion Completeness.”  In 2016, the US FDA Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy for mifepristone changed, permitting advance practice clinicians (APCs; ie, nurse practitioners [NPs], certified nurse midwives [CNMs], and physician associates [PAs]) to prescribe mifepristone. In this article, Dr. Patwardhan and co-authors find that medication abortions provided by APCs are similarly effective and safe compared with medication abortions provided by physicians.
