Demography, Data Innovation, and Population Disparities

CSDE intentionally and deliberately sparks new collaborations and launches new research initiatives that effectively leverage the capacities of demographers, data scientists, health scientists and scholars of inequality. We do this through an annual event with scientific exchanges organized around the theme of Demography, Data Innovation, and Population Disparities presentations organized by each PRA.

PRAs may invite keynote speakers or crucial external collaborators to join these multi-day events. The first day’s presentations focus on new data products, new data tools, and new analytic approaches. The second day’s focus on workshopping proposals for new directions in population health sciences and population dynamics that would leverage capacities in demography and data innovation to better understand and address population disparities.

These events are open to both UW and external affiliates. Senior mentors provide feedback and insights on both afternoons. Small research awards are given to high quality presentations and projects with greatest potential for scientific contributions.  Targeted follow up from the CDSE Development Core Lead with participants invite teams to further submit projects for pilot funding requests. Expenses would can include publicity, travel and logistics for invited speakers, and small research awards.

2026: Accelerate Policy and Research for Greater Impact

Early in 2026, CSDE sought brief proposals from local and state government agencies, or non-profit organizations serving the public, for practical research ideas that could be pursued in collaboration with UW faculty and staff. The goal of this effort was to offer academic researcher expertise and time to projects that will contribute to policy or practice that serves the public.

By mid-March, CSDE will select up to 10 proposals for which we have multiple faculty or staff at UW that could offer technical or substantive expertise. In April and May 2026, CSDE will convene two in-person live events for the potential partners to build trust, develop ideas, and write specific proposals. The goal of these partnerships is to draft a multi-year research proposal for private or public funding.

2025: CSDE’s 75th & Counting Anniversary

On May 15 and 16, 2025, CSDE celebrated more than 75 years of demographic research and training at the UW! We shared reflections and insights about:

  • CSDE’s histories
  • CSDE’s impact on research and training
  • CSDE’s future contributions in the next 75 years

Alumni, colleagues, faculty, friends, staff, and students joined CSDE for community building, learning, and more.

2024: D4 Hack Week: Disasters, Demography, Disparities, and Decisions

The University of Washington hosted a 5-day collaborative workshop from September 9-13, 2024, to advance research products and methods for improving observations, assessments, and forecasts across appropriate temporal and spatial scales.

The workshop will create improved data products and methods (data integration, data assimilation, analytic tools, new approaches to analyses) that integrate social and weather and/or climate data across space and time, through interdisciplinary collaborations.
