The Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology (CSDE) is a community of faculty and students associated to advance population science through research and training. As a federally funded research center with over 70 years of experience, the CSDE community of scholars develops new demographic measures and methods, advances knowledge about population dynamics, generates new data and evidence to support population science, and trains the next generation of demographers.

  • Measuring Welfare Reform

    It’s been 20 years since the federal government overhauled the welfare system, ending some benefits and encouraging work by offering training and childcare funds. While the number of people relying on welfare has dropped, Jennifer Romich, CSDE Affiliate and Associate Professor of Social Welfare at UW, makes an important public point: there’s another way to assess this reform’s regional impact.

  • Seasons of Splitting?

    From a child’s perspective, summer and winter holidays are some of the happiest times of the year… But this view isn’t always shared by parents. According to recent research from CSDE Affiliate and Associate Professor of Sociology at UW Julie Brines, couples are at highest risk of divorce during these two periods.   • Executive Committee of UW’s Population Health Initiative Features CSDE

    UW recently announced the 30 members it has chosen to govern its new Population Health Initiative, and CSDE has multiple seats at the table: Director Sara Curran and Affiliates Hedy Lee, India Ornelas, and Vicky Lawson were all named to the Executive Committee. The council’s members will lead the development of a 25-year vision for population health at the UW. Congratulations to those involved! We’re looking forward to watching the initiative develop.

Workshops and Seminars

CSDE hosts a variety of events on the latest research in population science. CSDE’s Friday seminar (12:30-1:30pm) is the place to meet colleagues, share your research, and bring a colleague from outside UW to share their research with CSDE. Workshops provide opportunities to build your methodological skill set and advance your research.
