Position Summary
The IUPUI Arts & Humanities Institute (IAHI) seeks a Postdoctoral Research Appointee who will be in residence at the IAHI from July 15, 2018 through June 14, 2020 (2 Year, Full-Time Appointment). This position is open to early career scholars studying the arts, social sciences, and humanities from a broad range of fields (e.g. urban anthropology, visual anthropology, cultural anthropology, human geography, public history, digital humanities), but whose research fundamentally integrates interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary methodologies and perspectives.
The IAHI Postdoctoral Research Program aims to create a legacy of scholars with rich experience in collaborative, interdisciplinary, and publicly engaged research across the arts, humanities, and social sciences. This program is designed to nurture the academic careers of early career scholars by providing opportunities to pursue innovative research while gaining mentoring from IAHI affiliates and faculty.
The Postdoctoral Research Appointee will be under the supervision of the IAHI Director and will be a key member of the IAHI research team. The Postdoctoral Research Appointee will:
• participate as a researcher in IAHI research projects under the supervision of the IAHI Director. These projects include the Rivers of the Anthropocene (rivers.iupui.edu) and the Cultural Ecologies Project (culturalecologies.org). Rivers of the Anthropocene project and its international research network of over 60 scholars has been active publishing, curating exhibitions, holding scholarly workshops, and developing community-based educational programming since its creation in 2012. The Cultural Ecologies Project—a multifaceted effort that includes, research, evaluation, public seminars, and a PhD program—asks the seemingly simple question, “How do cultural interventions transform cities?” This project works with community stakeholders to examine the impact of the arts and humanities across multiple scales—from the personal to the neighborhood to the city level.
• work alongside the IAHI Director to frame and engage the IAHI within national and international conversations relating to interdisciplinary scholarship in the arts and humanities through attendance at conferences and workshops.
• support the IAHI Director and research group in the design and development of research instruments, grants, peer-reviewed publications, and public programming. This includes working with the IAHI Director to identify, develop, and apply for major grants focused on developing the IAHI’s research projects and programs.
• engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by the IAHI Director.
• play an active role in the day-to-day activities of the Institute as required by the IAHI Director.
The Postdoctoral Research Appointee is expected to maintain their research profile and pursue an independent research project that they will move forward across the two years of the appointment. The approximate division between IAHI-related work and independent research will be 70/30.
Candidate Requirements
This position is ideal for early career scholars with a PhD in anthropology (all subfields welcome), history, public history, human geography, environmental studies, or field related to this research topic.
