CSDE’s fellowship program supports and prepares promising early researchers for careers that will have a significant impact on the field of demography.
CSDE Fellows receive financial support so that they can invest fully in research. Mentoring is a key feature of the Fellowship program. CSDE Faculty Affiliates provide one-on-one mentoring and mentoring in small faculty-led workshops. They may closely collaborate with Fellows on research. CSDE funds the visit of a renowned scholar invited by each Fellow to engage in the Fellow’s research and present their own latest work. Fellows receive funds for travel to advance their research and professional development. Fellows also have access to CSDE’s significant support services (computing aid, research consultations, workshops, lab equipment, and more).
With the support of CSDE’s fellowship program, productive fellows will be well positioned for producing innovative research and securing future investment in their research careers through early career path awards and future research grants.
Stipends are currently funded by the Shanahan Foundation. Appointments usually begin September 16 and run through September 15 of the next calendar year.

Students who are committed to careers in population research and who are enrolled in a PhD program in one of CSDE’s Affiliated Departments (Anthropology, Epidemiology, Geography, Global Health, Health Services, Public Policy and Governance, Social Work, Sociology, and Statistics) are eligible.
Competitive applicants are those who have demonstrated considerable potential to become productive independent researchers in demography and make a significant impact on population science. In line with the goal of the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein Institutional National Research Service Award, CSDE seeks to enhance the diversity of the demography-related research workforce and encourages applications from predoctoral students from populations in the US that have been shown to be underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral research workforce.
Fellowship Expectations and Policies
The CSDE Fellowship carries a set of expectations regarding academic progress, mentoring, research, and career development. CSDE Fellows must fulfill the regular requirements of their department’s graduate program on the recommended timeline, complete CSDE course requirements that have not already been fulfilled and maintain satisfactory performance and progress in both their Degree program and CSDE Fellowship program. The Fellows are expected to work on a research plan under the close supervision of a CSDE Affiliate. This research is central to the mission of the Fellowship. Fellows must also comply with CSDE policies and NIH requirements.
Applications are due Fall Quarter, and Fellows are typically selected early in the Winter Quarter. The call for for applications is emailed to CSDE Affiliates, CSDE trainees, and graduate program administrators in affiliated departments.
Applicants submit their applications to the graduate program administrator in their department and arrange for the administrator to receive two letters of recommendation. The administrators forward the competitive applications to CSDE.
