CSDE Fellowship Expectations and Policies

CSDE Fellows must fulfill the regular requirements of their Department’s Graduate Program on the recommended timeline and maintain satisfactory performance and progress. In addition, they must fulfill these CSDE and NIH Training Program requirements below:


Complete the two core courses in demography, CSDE/Sociology 513 (Demography and Ecology) and CSDE/CSSS/Sociology 533 (Research Methods in Demography), and the Population Studies Proseminar Series, CSDE 502 fall, winter and spring quarters. If these courses have not been completed prior to the Fellowship, they must be completed during the Fellowship.

Participate in Interdisciplinary Program

Enroll and actively participate in the CSDE interdisciplinary Seminar Series, CSDE 501, and in interdisciplinary workshops, panels and other activities during the time slot, in autumn, winter and spring quarters of the funding period.

Research under the Close Supervision of  CSDE Affiliate Mentor

The Fellowship research project is central to the mission of the Fellowship program and to CSDE’s philosophy that graduate students become professionals and skilled population scientists through intensive mentoring. Fellows and their mentor(s) develop a mentored research plan that meets the specified parameters of the fellowship, which are expected to vary with the fellow’s research experience and dissertation status. The mentored research plan should be discussed with the CSDE Training Director or Training Program Coordinator and approved by the Training Committee at least several weeks before the fellowship begins. Generally, Fellows who are advanced in their demography research career (e.g., have completed their General Exam and the Graduate Certificate in Demographic Methods) and have collaborated with their CSDE Affiliate mentor may choose to continue collaborating or focus completely on their own research provided the research is of central relevance to at least one of the CSDE’s Primary Research Areas. Other Fellows may be asked to develop an apprenticeship experience with their mentor by collaborating on a mutually agreeable research project. The goal is to gain experience in research through working with an experienced CSDE faculty affiliate on a project that trains the fellow in all aspects of the research process from design through writing and publication.

Professional Development

  1. Collaborate or take the lead in hosting out-of-town guest speakers.
    • Fellows may suggest speakers in their field to present at the Interdisciplinary Seminar Series. The Fellow will serve as the primary host, organizing and overseeing a schedule for the visitor, arranging meals, and introducing the speaker, among other duties, as well as serve as the moderator in the group meeting of the trainees with the speaker. The objective of these seminars is to provide the Fellow with an opportunity to consult with leading scholars who can provide feedback on their work and help them address challenges they may have encountered. Therefore, Fellows are very strongly encouraged to ask the visitor to read one of the Fellow’s manuscripts in advance, and discuss the research in a one-on-one meeting. These visits are not just to help the Fellow connect with scholars in their area. They are intended to improve the Fellow’s research.
    • Fellows organize and moderate graduate student discussions with out-of-town guest speakers after the seminar. The moderator is responsible for several tasks prior to the day of the seminar. Moderators: Read instructions here.
  2. Present research in CSDE’s Lightning Talks and Poster Session, as part of the CSDE Seminar series “Next Population Science Insights.” CSDE will recognize the best poster with an award.
  3. Serve on CSDE committees and participate in other activities.

Reporting Requirements

  1. Submit progress reports and evaluations of the training program at the end of the spring quarter, or more frequently.
  2. Respond promptly to inquiries regarding professional progress for up to 15 years post award.

Acknowledge CSDE and NIH Support

  1. Appropriately acknowledge NIH and CSDE support. Each publication, press release, or other document or presentation about research supported by this award must include an acknowledgment of NIH award support. The acknowledgement can be copied from here.
  2. Add the disclaimer that can be copied from here.
  3. Acknowledge your institutional affiliation with CSDE. Identify yourself as a CSDE Fellow when you or your research appears in the media and when writing bios (e.g., for publications).

Comply with all other NIH and UW Policies

  1. The NIH Public Access Policy ensures that the public has access to the published results from NIH funded research. To comply, deposit manuscripts upon acceptance for publication to the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central, if the journal does not submit the manuscript on behalf of the authors.   2. Outline your plan for professional growth in an Individual Development Plan (IDP). All new cohorts of trainees and Fellows are asked to complete and maintain an IDP and to discuss their IDP periodically with their mentors so that they achieve a mutual understanding of the student’s personal and professional goals. Fellows are also encouraged to discuss their IDP with the CSDE Training Director or Training Program Coordinator who may work with them to help them achieve their plans.   3. Complete online training in the Protection of Human Research Subjects Protection. There are several online options. The spring Proseminar (CSDE 502) requires the CITI web-based training course called Human Subjects Learners (Stage 1 – Basic Course). Comply with all regulations of the UW Human Subjects Division. IRB approval is required before starting research involving human subjects.
  4. Obtain eRA Commons login number. Please see the CSDE Administrator, about this.
  5. Supplementation and Compensation Policies: Fellows must receive permission from CSDE before receiving supplementation to their stipend or additional compensation from an employer to ensure the supplementation and compensation comply with CSDE and NIH Policies  (NIHGPS 11.3.10) For information on the policies click here.

The Role of Mentors in the Fellowship Program

In accepting the Fellowship and signing the offer letter, your Faculty Affiliate Mentor will be expected to provide you with intensive mentoring, attend training grant activities and CSDE activities in which you present your work and would benefit from their feedback (e.g., CSDE seminars/poster sessions), and respond promptly to requests for reports on your progress, evaluations of the Fellowship Program, and reports on other information needed for institutional grants.
