New ARPA-H Competition Aims to Accelerate Health Outcomes (Due 4/7/23)

The ARPA-H Dash to Accelerate Health Outcomes, or “ARPA-H Dash,” launched on March 15, 2023 to help identify revolutionary evidence-based ideas to transform health. The ARPA-H Dash is a collaborative online competition open to bold thinkers across health, scientific, and technology communities, as well as the general public. The ARPA-H Dash will use a bracket format and online discussion, debate, and voting to narrow submissions to quarterfinalists, semifinalists, finalists, and a champion idea during March and April 2023.

Nominations for the ARPA-H Dash will be accepted through an online portal for review between March 29 and April 7, 2023. Each submission should include a piece of evidence with citation, published after January 1, 2018, a short descriptive title for display in the brackets, identification of which ARPA-H focus area is targeted for transformation, and answers to three questions about the proposed transformation.

Applied Demographer – University of Florida

The Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR) at the University of Florida seeks to hire an applied demographer to develop population and household estimates and projections for Florida. They are looking for someone with training in demographic methods at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level, good programming skills in SAS and/or R, and familiarity with Census data. Call for applications: Barcelona Summer School of Demography-BSSD 2023 (Due 3/31/23)

The Barcelona Summer School of Demography (BSSD), offers a four-week course in R. The course is divided into four modules -one per week- covering three major strengths of R: statistical and demographic analysis, data visualization and spatial analysis. Each module consists of 20 hours of teaching, combining theoretical lectures and practical exercises.

EarthLab and The Population Health Initiative Co-host Networking Event

On April 11, EarthLab and The Population Health Initiative will cohost an Open Space-style event to help to support UW researchers in laying the groundwork for new, interdisciplinary partnerships that address key facets of climate change. Attendees of the event will set the agenda for discussion, offering to convene discussions on possible topics or projects where collaboration is sought. The formal program will be followed by a more informal networking lunch.

Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship – Population Health Initiative

The Population Health Initiative, in partnership with the Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship, CoMotion, the Evans School of Public Policy & Governance and the School of Public Health, offers a Social Entrepreneurship Fellows Program in which students explore how best to deploy social enterprise models for innovations that are developed by University of Washington researchers.

The program supports graduate fellows from different disciplines to work on a range of different projects. Students from a range of disciplines are encouraged to apply, including business, engineering, social work, law, public policy and public health.

Each fellow will have primary responsibility for one of the projects, but fellows will work as a team, with each fellow contributing their disciplinary expertise to all four projects. Fellows will be guided through a structured workplan by program faculty and staff, and will also have access to mentors and subject matter experts.

The initiative is offering one virtual information session to learn more about the program:

Instructor – University of Washington College of Built Environments

The Runstad Department of Real Estate is seeking applicants for affiliate instructors to teach undergraduate (4XX numbers) and graduate (5XX numbers) level courses during the 2023-2024 academic years, with the potential for teaching them in future years as well.

Applicants must have an Undergraduate degree (for undergraduate courses) or Master’s degree (for graduate courses) in a relevant field. Work experience in the relevant field is required. Teaching experience is preferred although professional experience will be evaluated accordingly.

New Study by Bekemeier Reveals Rural Health Data Challenges During Pandemic

CSDE Affiliate Betty Bekemeier’s latest article published in the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice: JPHMP,  “Rural Public Health Data Challenges During the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Case for Building Better Systems Ahead of a Public Health Crisis“, addresses the need for high-quality population data and the capacity to effectively use this data in the context of COVID-19. This paper explores Rural public health data challenges and provides recommendations for improving rural data access and capacity ahead of future crises by gathering qualitative data from rural public health personnel.

Health Care Analyst- San Francisco Department of Public Health

The 2119 Health Care Analyst works with clinical and non-clinical staff and personnel in evaluation studies; gathers, analyzes and documents data; plans remedial action; and supervises and reviews the work of technical and clerical assistants engaged in such activities.

Essential duties include:

1. Organizes and tabulates the data collected for evaluation studies; analyzes data and prepares narrative, statistical reports and presentations documenting the methodology and results of the health audit studies.

2. Initiates, coordinates and attends clinic and departmental evaluation meetings to insure an on-going evaluation process in each department or clinic; works with department and clinic chiefs, head nurses, dentists and other staff; designs audit and evaluation studies, including data collection instruments and sampling procedures.

3. Trains and supervises other staff in data retrieval and trains end users to access, use and understand reports.

4. Works with evaluation committees to develop remedial action plans based on study results; documents all remedial action planning and monitors all implementation.

5. Serves as staff to assigned committees; prepares agendas, minutes; reports developments, results and problems in the program; prepares written reports.

6. Reports orally and in writing to appropriate committees on completed evaluation studies including resulting problems which require action from those committees; attends audit related committees in the state and community and reports findings to appropriate stakeholders.

7. Reviews literature and consults with various evaluation committees on their evaluation activities.

Research Analyst – Center on Poverty and Social Policy at Columbia University

The Center on Poverty and Social Policy at the Columbia University School of Social Work focuses on poverty and social policy issues in the United States. The center is seeking a Research Analyst to provide research and analytical support to the Center on Poverty and Social Policy and the Columbia Population Research Center.

As the Poverty Tracker and Early Childhood Poverty Tracker studies have grown, there is an increased need to work with and analyze the data that has come in through the study. The Research Analyst will be responsible for producing reports and analyses using data from the Poverty Tracker and Early Childhood Poverty Tracker in order to meet the study’s goals. The Poverty Tracker, a joint project of Robin Hood and Columbia University, is a longitudinal study of the dynamics of poverty and disadvantage in New York City.
