A post-doc on migration for the Institute´s research project on internal migration and mobility, which focusses on understanding patterns, processes and determinants of internal migration, spatial mobility and commuting at the aggregate and individual levels. A post-doc on migration for the DFG-funded “German Emigration and Remigration Panel Study“, which aims to collect primary data to investigate individual-level motives and consequences of international mobility between Germany and other Western countries. At the post-doctoral level, we are looking for candidates with excellent research profiles in international and/or internal migration, spatial mobility, or in a cognate research area. The candidates should have strong skills in the quantitative analysis of spatial / longitudinal data sets.

Health Data Analytics Cluster Hire in the Department of Demography

The Department of Demography at the University of Texas at San Antonio, in partnership with other academic units at UTSA, is committed to advancing demographic and policy driven research using large, complex data sets and novel analytic approaches to big data. The department has an opening for an Assistant or Associate professor in demography starting Fall 2018, with specializations in big data, health/life course/environment/space and time, and policy. The Department of Demography is housed in the College of Public Policy. The successful applicant will create and/or maintain a nationally prominent research program, including securing external funding, focused on big data issues in demography and health and inequality. The candidate would also be expected to contribute to the development of the research capacity for big data/health/demographic and policy research across disciplines and other academic units at UTSA. Collaborations may result from the following institutes, departments, and collaborations: Institute for Demographic and Socioeconomic Research (IDESR), Texas State Data Center; consortium agreement with the Texas Census Research Data Center (TxRDC) at Texas A&M University, Institute for Health Disparities, San Antonio Life Sciences Institute (SALSI), UT Health San Antonio, UT School of Public Health San Antonio, Department of Kinesiology, Health and Nutrition, Department of Sociology, and Department of Management Science and Statistics.

-The position involves teaching, research, advising, mentoring and other activities in the PhD program in Applied Demography. Responsibilities include teaching doctoral, master’s, and/or undergraduate courses offered at UTSA’s Downtown campus, including evening classes; scholarly research and publication; acquisition of external funding; and university and professional service. The Department of Demography has approximately 40 students enrolled in the Applied Demography PhD program with about one-third of them being supported as research assistants. Assistant Professor of Quantitative Sociology

The T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics (SSFD), an interdisciplinary academic unit within Arizona State University (https://thesanfordschool.asu.edu/), is strengthening its sociology programs and invites applicants for a 9-month, tenure-track position in Quantitative Sociology at the rankof Assistant Professor for fall of 2018. We seek applicants with an emerging record of excellence in research in quantitative sociology and the development of cutting-edge quantitative methods. The specific area of methodological focus is open, but preference will be given to those whose work expands the existing areas of quantitative expertise in SSFD. Preferential areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: causal inference from non experimental data, sociological measurement, multilevel modeling, Bayesian inference, and social network analysis. Preference also is given to candidates who are interested in working within interdisciplinary settings in areas such as health and well-being, family and community dynamics, and diversity. This position is part of an effort to build a 21st-century sociology program with new and existing resources in the well-established and successful School of Social and Family Dynamics. The hire builds on the significant strengths of SSFD’s existing interdisciplinary Measurement and Statistical Analysis specialization (see https://thesanfordschool.asu.edu/masa).
For this position, candidates must have a PhD in sociology by time of appointment and have demonstrated a record of excellence in research, teaching, and service commensurate with appointment as an Assistant Professor in SSFD. The ideal candidate must also have a demonstrated potential for leadership, collaboration, and success in securing and managing external funding. The successful candidate will teach an undergraduate course on multivariate analysis for the social sciences, and other advanced quantitative courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels as part of SSFD and also as part of the interdisciplinary methods certificate program that are part of the Institute for Social Science Research (https://issr.asu.edu/). In addition, the candidate will be expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students, maintain an active agenda of peer-reviewed publications, develop a vigorous, externally funded research program, participate in service to the university and profession, and help build productive relationships with faculty both within and beyond SSFD.
The School of Social and Family Dynamics is an innovative interdisciplinary academic unit focused on the health and well-being of individuals, families, groups, organizations, and society. Assistant Professor of Spatial Data Science

The University of California, Santa Barbara Department of Geography invites applications for a tenure-track position in spatial data science at the rank of Assistant Professor. The department seeks applicants with core research interests in inferential and computational analysis of spatial data, data mining, and machine learning in support of any substantive domain in the field of Geography or allied fields that rely on spatiotemporal data. The Department of Geography has strengths in three broadly defined areas: human geography; earth system science; and modeling, measurement, and computation. This position is most strongly associated with the third of these areas, but interest in one or both of the other systematic areas is also desirable. We provide opportunities for interactions with many other departments and research units on the campus, including the Center for Spatial Studies, various labs (Space and Time for Knowledge Organization, GeoTrans, GeoOpt), the Broom Demography Center, and the Center for Information Technology & Society. New Bio-Social Post-Doctoral Training at UNC

Apply by October 15 2017 for From Biological to Social Processes: Interdisciplinary Training in Life Course Research — a new Bio-Social Training Program that aims to promote and support interdisciplinary training of Post-doctoral scholars from both the social sciences and biological/health sciences. Trainees will have the opportunity to receive interdisciplinary mentorship and training in a wide array of content areas, ranging from social inequalities to biological processes. Training will begin January 2018. NICHD funded.

2017-18 QUAL Speaker Series Schedule Announced

The QUAL Speaker Series line-up for the upcoming school year is complete. In this year’s series, faculty, doctoral students and a postdoc fellow will share insights from their own qualitative research projects, including practical tips for conducting field work. Our first talk will focus on PhD Candidate Matthew Adeiza’s experience studying two rival presidential campaigns in Sub-Saharan Africa during the 2016 campaign season. Please join us for this year’s inaugural talk on October 18. This and all following speaker series sessions are held on Wednesdays at 12:30 pm in Thomson Hall 317. Fall Quarter QUAL Workshop

QUAL Workshops are free, hands-on tutorials. They are open to any UW graduate students interested in deepening their qualitative multi-method data analysis skills. Workshops are typically offered in Autumn and Spring quarters.
