Data Products

The NWFSRDC offers researchers with approved projects access to over 200 restricted survey and administrative datasets not available in the public domain from the U.S. Census Bureau and other partner and collaborating agencies and entities from the U.S. Federal Statistical System.

Advantages of Restricted Data – Better Suited, More Accurate & Accessible

Many, but not all, of the data available through FSRDCs have public-release counterparts. These public data, however, often have geographic identifiers suppressed or available only for coarse geographies. What makes data at FSRDCs of particular interest to researchers is access to detailed geographic information, generally to the block and census-tract levels for surveys. FSRDC data also offer researchers less restrictive top-coding and censoring; additional variables (e.g., date of birth), some in greater detail (e.g., race/ethnicity) or sensitive (e.g., youth sexual behavior and mental health); full counts or larger samples; and original responses or “raw” data without imputations. Most notably, the presence of consistent identifiers across many of the available datasets supports research with linked data. Linked data products may already exist or be requested by researchers through their research proposal application for a fee.

Available Datasets

We provide below a listing of datasets currently accessible through FSRDCs. Visit ResearchDataGov.org for more information and documentation about these data. As new data resources are added frequently or data availability may change over time, we ask researchers to contact us for up-to-date information about the availability of particular datasets, especially before writing a research proposal. Researchers should also contact us to verify the eligibility requirements and fees to access data as these vary across federal agencies and type of data. Some data, like Bureau of Economic Analysis data for example, may only be accessed by U.S. citizens.

Data Available via Remote Access

FSRDCs offer remote access to a number of datasets in cases where all eligibility conditions are met. Only researchers on approved projects where all requested datasets are eligible for remote access may apply for remote access. Eligible datasets generally include those collected solely under Census Bureau Title 13 protections as well as selected datasets from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics. The current list of datasets available for remote access as well as all eligibility conditions are available here. For more information about remote data access at the NWFSRDC contact us at nwfsrdc@uw.edu.
