Lapham Receives 2022-23 Magnuson Scholarship

The UW Warren G. Magnuson Institute for Biomedical Research and Health Professions Training recently awarded CSDE Trainee & 2020 Population Health Applied Research Fellow Jessica Lapham the 2022-23 Magnuson Scholarship. Each year the institute funds one scholar from each of the six schools of health sciences. One of Jessica’s goals is to examine how social structures and policy contexts protect or worsen health, particularly for economically disadvantaged groups and desire to conduct social welfare research to promote health equity, making her well positioned to continue Senator Magnuson’s legacy of healthcare policy reform.

Zhang, Xu, and Zhao Propose Methodological Approach for ‘Big Data’ Analyses

Shaozeng Zhang, with CSDE Affiliates Dafeng Xu and Bo Zhao recently published a new article in Methodological Innovations. First, the authors develop a methodological approach which guides the selection and processing of big data to make big data smaller and structured for analyses within social sciences conventional methods. Second, the authors apply this methodology to Google’s mobility dataset to conduct a difference-in-differences analysis of social distancing behavior.

New Article from Wachter & Acolin: “Homeownership in the Long Run”

Susan Wachter and CSDE Affiliate Arthur Acolin recently published an article in the Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy. The authors discuss what is known about homeownership outcomes and policies: how borrowing constraints and housing affordability are impacting current homeownership outcomes; how the trajectory of homeownership rates over time from pre-Great Depression through the current period reflects lending regimes; and how future trajectories based on projected demographic trends and lending environments imply a very different future for U.S. homeownership outcomes.
