Professor of Sociology/Anthropology & Department Chair

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Richmond (UR) invites applications for the position of Department Chair to begin during the summer 2018. The successful candidate will have an outstanding record as a teacher-scholar in either Sociology or Cultural Anthropology.

We seek an established scholar with an exceptional publication record who also thrives in teaching and mentoring in the context of an undergraduate environment. In addition, the successful candidate will possess the dedication, vision, and skills to lead a diverse department. Thus, the successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to diversity and equity throughout their career. The candidate should have a PhD in related fields, teaching and publication record commensurate with the rank of Full Professor at the University of Richmond, and administrative experience in higher education. The Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology reports to the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. The Chair will serve for a five-year term, renewable, with a specific review in the third year and other reviews consistent with Chair appointment in Arts & Sciences.

The Chair of Sociology and Anthropology will lead a department of eight tenured and tenure stream faculty, in addition to term and adjunct faculty, a diverse group both in human and intellectual terms. Arts & Sciences comprises 70% of the undergraduate majors at the university. The first-year class in the fall of 2017 was comprised of 30% underrepresented students and 10% international students.

Lecturer in Sociology

The Department of Sociology and Criminology & Law at the University of Florida is inviting applications for a Lecturer in Sociology to begin August 16, 2018. This is a nine-month, full-time, non-tenure accruing position, renewable appointment. The Lecturer will serve as Course Coordinator for SYG 2000 Principles of Sociology, as well as teach 2-3 high-demand or foundational courses each semester, and contribute to other instructional needs of the undergraduate Sociology program, such as some advising duties. The successful candidate must have a PhD in Sociology upon appointment.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION

Teaching responsibilities include three undergraduate courses each semester. Depending on the needs of the department and the applicant’s areas of expertise, the selected candidate will teach courses in psychopathology, multicultural psychology, research methods, group processes, counseling, and clinical psychology. In addition to relevant existing courses, the successful candidate also may teach courses in the areas of her or his interest and expertise. The successful candidate will maintain an active program of research/scholarship involving undergraduates. The department is committed to the Teacher/Scholar model and places an emphasis on faculty support of undergraduate research.

Professional Qualifications

To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have earned a doctorate in Clinical/Counseling Psychology from an APA accredited institution. Prior undergraduate teaching experience is required as well as experience leading an active research program that involves undergraduate students. It is also expected that the candidate is engaging in publishable research within their area of expertise.

To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research, creative achievement and professional development; service to the University; and public service and service to the community. Although tenure may be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that “the normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time probationary service and credited service, if any. Any deviation from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).” Tenure is required for promotion above the level of Associate Professor.

Rank and Salary 

Salary, service credit, and rank (when appropriate) depends upon academic preparation and professional experience.

The approximate salary range for this position is $68,000 to $72,500, depending on experience.

Associate Professor: The School of Social Work at Portland State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Associate Professor. Our program seeks applicants to provide instruction in the MSW program advanced clinical practice sequence, foundation practice courses, and electives. Various assignments for non-tenure track instructional and research faculty may include direct instruction, supporting scholarly activities, and service to the University, community, and profession. This is a nine-month, full-time academic appointment, scheduled to begin September 2018.   We primarily seek applicants who have professional experience in adult mental health and are skilled at cross-agency collaboration. Ideal candidates will also provide evidence of experience working effectively around issues of social justice, diversity, racial equity, and inclusion, with demonstrated capacity to meet the needs of underrepresented students and other marginalized groups. Call for Submissions: 2018 Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science (IAPHS) Conference

Submissions are invited for the IAPHS 2018 conference, “Pushing the Boundaries of Population Health Science: Social Inequalities, Biological Processes, and Policy Implications.” This 4th annual interdisciplinary population health research conference will convene October 3-5, 2018 at the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine in Washington, DC.

The deadline for submissions is March 15, 2018 and those submitting will be notified of decisions by June 15, 2018. Registration for the October conference will open April 1, 2018 for members of IAPHS and May 15 for non-members. Call for Applications: Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) Global Scholars Program

Postdoctoral Training in the Epidemiology of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias

The University of Southern California Multidisciplinary Training in Gerontology Program will make two postdoctoral appointments for two years in the Epidemiology of Alzheimer’s and Related Dementia as part of its NIA supported training grant. Candidates should be planning a research career in ADRD related research.

Call for Applications: Genomics for Social Scientists Workshop

Researchers from the University of Michigan invite you to apply to the Genomics for Social Scientists workshop, held at the University of Michigan from June 18-22, 2018.

The purpose of this NIA-sponsored workshop is to familiarize researchers with genetic data and provide hands-on training on incorporating genetic information into social science analyses. Using both lecture and lab formats, participants will use tutorial versions of the Health and Retirement Study core survey data and genetic data files. The week-long workshop will offer a multitude of opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration among attendees and feedback from University of Michigan investigators and course instructors. This year’s guest speakers include:

  • Pam Herd, Professor of Public Affairs and Sociology University of Wisconsin – Madison and Principal Investigator, Wisconsin Longitudinal Study
  • Ben Domingue, Assistant Professor, Stanford

This course is designed to primarily benefit researchers who already have experience conducting statistical examinations of behavioral traits, but who may have little or no genetic or biological training. Investigators interested in a better understanding of genomic analysis as it applies to social and behavioral science research are encouraged to apply.
